President promises to complete $6bn gas project

FROM PAUL OSUYI, ASABA

The visit of President Goodluck Jonathan for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally to Delta State yesterday shut down socio-economic activities in Asaba, the capital. Markets were closed as the traders were mobilised to the cenotaph venue. This is even as some major streets were barricaded as residents earnestly waited for the arrival of the President and his team under the scorching sun.

The visit was billed for 2pm, but the convoy arrived at the venue at about 4pm, just as the huge crowd that had gathered earlier started leaving the venue.

Addressing the gathering, President Jonathan expressed satisfaction for the large turn-out, describing Delta as a PDP state.

The President promised massive employment for the teeming youths across the country through the encouragement of talents in the entertainment industry and the commitment to the completion of the $16 billion Delta Gas City Project at Ogidigben in Warri South-West Local Government.

He said the city project is the biggest investment in gas in Africa where government and the private sector can collaborate and “when completed, everybody will get a job. People in Delta and outside Delta will be employed.”

He said the Federal Government was also establishing the first Marine University in Delta to train and impact technical knowledge in maritime engineering and urged youths to take advantage of the situation.

The President, who was flanked by his wife, Patience, urged the electorates to vote for all PDP candidates from the President down to the state House of Assembly, noting that he would be very happy to work with Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, who is the governorship candidate.

Earlier, Vice President Namadi Sambo said the Jonathan administration was committed to addressing the issue of power supply, disclosing that the Sapele New Energy Power Plant has been completed for commissioning.

Sambo said the Presidency has approved the construction of a coastal railway line from Lagos to connect the South-South and South- East.

The Vice President urged Deltans to cast their votes for Jonathan, who he described as youthful, experienced and intelligent, saying that they should not cast their votes for somebody who is over 70 years old and cannot stand to address the public for just two minutes.

Welcoming the presidential campaign team, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan said the state has benefitted a lot from the Jonathan administration particularly in the areas of sports, entertainment, peace and security, infrastructure and micro credit.

He assured the President that Deltans will cast their votes for him and all PDP candidates. Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, described the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party that is dead on arrival and urged Deltans not to make the mistake of voting APC.

The rally was attended by the National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, former Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, Governors Liyel Imoke of Cross River and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa. Also in attendance were the Coordinating Minster for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Niger Delta, Steve Oru, PDP governorship candidate, Okowa, actors and actresses among others.
