Their debut for Roulette Records was the single "The Crawl", but the group's second single, the Ribbon Records release "You Were Mine", was their biggest hit. It peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959. Following the single's success, The Paulette Sisters released an answer record called "I Was Yours", and Wayne Thomas covered "You Were Mine". Later singles included "I Can't Say Goodbye", "Marianne", and "My Girl" (all 1960); "I Can't Say Goodbye" was the only charter, peaking at number 90 in the USA. The group issued several further singles, as well as a split LP with The Dubs in 1963. You can catch them on CD2 track 4. "The Videls" were a Rhode Island-based trio, Peter Andreoli, Vincent Poncia, Jr and Norman Marzano, who met in Providence and cut records initially for the local Rhody record label. They came to national attention when one of the Rhody releases, "Mister Lonely," got picked up by the JDS label based in New York. It became a modest hit in the spring of 1960, rising to number 73 nationally. This was to be the peak of their chart success, but it led to releases for Kapp and other labels. "The Velvets" were an American doo wop group from Odessa in Ector County in west Texas. The African American quintet was formed in 1959 by Virgil Johnson, a high school English teacher, with four of his students. Roy Orbison heard the group and signed them to Monument Records in 1960. They close this set with their hit "It Will Stand". Excellent sound quality and attractive packaging plus the all essential liner notes from Joseph Adair. Running time approx 100 minutes. Good value too. Look out for more sets from this independent label who are building a great catalogue of vintage music of the 1950s and 1960s. (C. FULLER, R&B REVIEW)
